I’ve been struck by how many sections of Tanakh seem to shed light on the Simchat Torah War.
Prior to the war, Israeli society was on the brink of collapse. The strife within was so extreme that it was akin to a civil war. I was reminded of this scene.
The Rock of Division
Saul was making his way along one side of a hill, and David and his men were on the other side of the hill. David was trying hard to elude Saul, and Saul and his men were trying to encircle David and his men and capture them,-a
when a messenger came and told Saul, “Come quickly, for the Philistines have invaded the land.”
Saul gave up his pursuit of David and went to meet the Philistines. That is why that place came to be called the Rock of Separation.
-I Samuel 23: 26-28
In times of crisis, we forego infighting to focus on the threat from outside.
Tziklag
Herzog College was the first one to make this parallel (see their sourcesheet at this link). What happened on Oct 7 was horrific. Women were raped. People were slaughtered. Babies and the elderly, along with men, women and children were kidnapped. King David faced a similar crisis when he discovered that Tziklag had been raided and burned.
By the time David and his men arrived in Ziklag, on the third day, the Amalekites had made a raid into the Negeb and against Ziklag; they had stormed Ziklag and burned it down.
They had taken the women in it captive, from little children to grown women (Radak) alternatively, whether high-born or low-born (Sefaria); they did not kill any, but carried them off and went their way.
When David and his men came to the town and found it burned down, and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive,
David and the troops with him broke into tears, until they had no strength left for weeping.
David’s two wives had been taken captive, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail wife of Nabal from Carmel.
וַתֵּ֨צֶר לְדָוִ֜ד מְאֹ֗ד כִּֽי־אָמְר֤וּ הָעָם֙ לְסׇקְל֔וֹ כִּי־מָ֙רָה֙ נֶ֣פֶשׁ כׇּל־הָעָ֔ם אִ֖ישׁ עַל־בָּנָ֣ו וְעַל־בְּנֹתָ֑יו וַיִּתְחַזֵּ֣ק דָּוִ֔ד בַּיהֹוָ֖ה אֱלֹהָֽיו׃ {ס}
David was in great danger, for the troops threatened to stone him; for all the troops were embittered on account of their sons and daughters.
But David sought strength in the LORD his God.
David said to the priest Abiathar son of Ahimelech, “Bring the ephod up to me.” When Abiathar brought up the ephod to David,
David inquired of the LORD, “Shall I pursue those raiders? Will I overtake them?” And He answered him, “Pursue, for you shall overtake and you shall rescue.”
As we all know, our people, including our children and babies have been taken hostage. The only thing to do is to pursue them and rescue them, as David did.
Recovering Hostages
One does not need to agree with a person, their choices or their lifestyle to risk everything to recover them. Abram had parted ways from his nephew Lot. The midrash explains it was because of the way that Lot’s shepherds were behaving- pasturing sheep on land that was not theirs. Lot went to Sodom, and we know the kind of place that was. Despite all of this, Abram does not give up on Lot and risks everything to bring him back. So too, all kinds of people with all kinds of viewpoints and beliefs have been kidnapped. Our job is to bring them back.
[The invaders] seized all the wealth of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their provisions, and went their way.
They also took Lot, the son of Abram’s brother, and his possessions, and departed; for he had settled in Sodom.
A fugitive brought the news to Abram the Hebrew, who was dwelling at the terebinths of Mamre the Amorite, kinsman of Eshkol and Aner, these being Abram’s allies.
When Abram heard that his kinsman’s [household] had been taken captive, he mustered his retainers, born into his household, numbering three hundred and eighteen, and went in pursuit as far as Dan.
At night, he and his servants deployed against them and defeated them; and he pursued them as far as Hobah, which is north of Damascus.
He brought back all the possessions; he also brought back his kinsman Lot and his possessions, and the women and the rest of the people.
Informants
The IDF has been dropping leaflets and otherwise advertising and broadcasting that any person who comes forward with information about a hostage’s whereabouts will be rewarded. This is similar to the story of Rahab. Not only does she hide the spies and refuse to inform about their whereabouts, but she also strikes a deal with them.
She said to the men, “I know that GOD has given the country to you, because dread of you has fallen upon us, and all the inhabitants of the land are quaking before you.
For we have heard how GOD dried up the waters of the Sea of Reeds for you when you left Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two Amorite kings across the Jordan, whom you doomed.
When we heard about it, we lost heart, and no one had any more spirit left because of you; for the ETERNAL your God is the only God in heaven above and on earth below.
Now, since I have shown loyalty to you, swear to me by GOD that you in turn will show loyalty to my family. Provide me with a reliable sign
that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and save us from death.”
The men answered her, “Our lives are pledged for yours, even to death! If you do not disclose this mission of ours, we will show you true loyalty when GOD gives us the land.”
And this is how Rahab’s red cord is born. True to their word, the spies save her and her family when they take Jericho.
Controlling the Flow of Information
The IDF made an error in allowing one of the hostages to speak freely about her experience to the media. The hostage’s words were used for propaganda videos put out by people who were pro-Hamas alleging that she was treated very humanely. Because of this, the IDF has now come up with a new hostage release protocol.
This is similar to Moses’ sin when it came to the spies. The spies could have returned and shared their findings with him and Aaron. The leaders could then have determined what to share with the nation. Instead, the spies spoke in front of the entire nation. Their words terrified the nation, undermined their confidence and made them lose faith in the idea of entering and winning the Promised Land. Had Moses controlled the flow of information, that fear would never have infected the people.
They went straight to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh in the wilderness of Paran, and they made their report to them and to the whole community, as they showed them the fruit of the land.
This is what they told him: “We came to the land you sent us to; it does indeed flow with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.
However, the people who inhabit the country are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large; moreover, we saw the Anakites there.
Amalekites dwell in the Negeb region; Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites inhabit the hill country; and Canaanites dwell by the Sea and along the Jordan.”
Caleb hushed the people before Moses and said, “Let us by all means go up, and we shall gain possession of it, for we shall surely overcome it.”
But the other men who had gone up with him said, “We cannot attack that people, for it is stronger than we.”
Thus they spread calumnies among the Israelites about the land they had scouted, saying, “The country that we traversed and scouted is one that devours its settlers. All the people that we saw in it are of great size;
we saw the Nephilim there—the Anakites are part of the Nephilim—and we looked like grasshoppers to ourselves, and so we must have looked to them.”
The Siege of Gaza
There are many reasons why the IDF is choosing to lay siege to Gaza. (And yes, it’s not a complete siege, because they are allowing humanitarian aid to enter). But one of the simplest is the hope that Hamas will be forced to come out of their hidey-holes and/or people who support Hamas will be forced to turn against them. In this sense, the siege tactic is similar to what Joab did to Sheva ben Bichri.
[Joab’s men] came and besieged him in Abel of Beth-maacah; they threw up a siegemound against the city and it stood against the rampart.-f
All the troops with Joab were engaged in battering the wall,-g
when a clever woman shouted from the city, “Listen! Listen! Tell Joab to come over here so I can talk to him.”
He approached her, and the woman asked, “Are you Joab?” “Yes,” he answered; and she said to him, “Listen to what your handmaid has to say.” “I’m listening,” he replied.
And she continued, “In olden times people used to say, ‘Let them inquire of Abel,’-a and that was the end of the matter.
אָנֹכִ֕י שְׁלֻמֵ֖י אֱמוּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אַתָּ֣ה מְבַקֵּ֗שׁ לְהָמִ֨ית עִ֤יר וְאֵם֙ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לָ֥מָּה תְבַלַּ֖ע נַחֲלַ֥ת יְהֹוָֽה׃ {פ}
I am one of those who seek the welfare of the faithful in Israel. But you seek to bring death upon a mother city in Israel! Why should you destroy the LORD’s possession?”
Joab replied, “Far be it, far be it from me to destroy or to ruin!
Not at all! But a certain man from the hill country of Ephraim, named Sheba son of Bichri, has rebelled against King David. Just hand him alone over to us, and I will withdraw from the city.” The woman assured Joab, “His head shall be thrown over the wall to you.”
וַתָּבוֹא֩ הָאִשָּׁ֨ה אֶל־כׇּל־הָעָ֜ם בְּחׇכְמָתָ֗הּ וַֽיִּכְרְת֞וּ אֶת־רֹ֨אשׁ שֶׁ֤בַע בֶּן־בִּכְרִי֙ וַיַּשְׁלִ֣כוּ אֶל־יוֹאָ֔ב וַיִּתְקַע֙ בַּשֹּׁפָ֔ר וַיָּפֻ֥צוּ מֵעַל־הָעִ֖יר אִ֣ישׁ לְאֹהָלָ֑יו וְיוֹאָ֛ב שָׁ֥ב יְרוּשָׁלַ֖͏ִם אֶל־הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ {ס}
The woman came to all the people with her clever plan; and they cut off the head of Sheba son of Bichri and threw it down to Joab. He then sounded the horn; all the men dispersed to their homes, and Joab returned to the king in Jerusalem.
The siege would be over with the return of the hostages and the elimination of Hamas, just as this siege ended once Sheva was eliminated.
As the war continues, there will doubtless be more parallels.
In the meantime, it’s clear Tanakh is not just a compelling epic, or the story of the birth of the Jewish people, or a compendium of life-giving laws and values…it’s also a strategy manual.
Onward and upward, valiant soldiers of the IDF!
Not sure that israel can control what released hostages do or don’t say, but interesting.
Also half of tehillim seems germane. For example psalm 126.
