I just saw the trailer for “Fire Dance” by Rama Burshtein, an Israeli TV show about forbidden love, and oh, do I want to watch this.
Here it is.
“The eight-part series tells the story of 18-year-old Feigie, a troubled teenager growing up with her single mother in an insular Haredi sect. The series is laced with fantasy, and shows Feigie falling in love with Nathan, the charismatic, married son of the leader of their community” according to TOI.
This has everything- the marginalized girl who has no yichus and is in fact considered defective and her impossible love for the established, high-status, married son of the Rav. It has the potential to be an outstanding drama- not because the exact circumstance is realistic, but because it tackles human emotions like desire and love and the frustration of not knowing what to do when they are either unrequited or impossible.
Next Rama should do a story of a kohen who falls in love with a convert…a situation that happened in real life to someone I know and did not end happily.
I have a friend who is a kohen who was dating a divorcee for years. They finally found a mesader kiddushin would go through with it and are happily married for a few years now.
Have you seen Rama’s other films? They are incredible! And her personal story is also very special.
